XIII Corps
VIII Corps was commanded by Lt-General Sir Walter Congreve VC, the Horse shoes were obviously a sign of good luck and also were technically two 'C's which stood for Congreve's Corps. VIII Corps worked very closely with XV Corps in the opening stages of the Battles of the Somme and Congreve was the instigater of the plan adopted for the attacks on 14th July around Bazentin Ridge.
